Helping to tackle anxiety with Premier League Primary Stars
23/01/26, 12:00
Over the last two years, in association with Premier League Primary Stars, Cross-Curricular Co-Ordinator Ewan Tester has been mentoring a year 6 student; helping him tackle his anxiety.
As part of our Premier League Primary Stars programme, we run a bespoke mentoring service to help young people cope with their issues using the power of sport to break down barriers and talk.
One of our most recent cases is a year 6 student who has been struggling with anxiety.
Talking about his anxiety and how the mentoring sessions have helped, the student said:
"I love the fact that I get to come out of class for about 30 minutes. I like playing sport and I just like having a catch up when we play sport, I think it's great.
As long as I'm with someone I know, like me and a friend, like you for example; I know I can trust you."
Speaking about the student and the progress he's made, Ewan said:
"He's a really confident young man. Really, really capable, but towards the end of year 4 he started showing anxiety when it came to big public events.
Our sessions are really focused on an opportunity for him to express his feelings. He's now regularly going into sessions now where he's not comfortable, but he's managing to deal with them really well."
