Active Science is a series of six one-hour long lessons, aimed at Year 5/6 pupils:

Lesson 1The Heart of the Matter Pupils learn about the human circulatory system and have the exciting opportunity to use heart rate monitors to carry out an investigation.

Lesson 2Food For Thought Pupils learn about the impact that their diet has on their bodies.

Lesson 3Heart-Smart Pupils learn about their heart and how to keep it healthy.

Lesson 4May The Force Be With You Pupils learn about forces and how they affect the performance of athletes. The highlight is running whilst attached to a resistance parachute.

Lesson 5Measure For Measure Pupils learn about the importance of measuring accurately in both science and sport. They even get the chance to use a Gilson pipette!

Lesson 6Mini-Olympics This is a celebration of the work that has been produced over the previous weeks.

ACTIVE SCIENCE DAY

Cambridge United Foundation also host an annual Active Science Day at the Abbey Stadium. Local Primary Schools that have been involved in the Active Science project are invited to the stadium to take part in practical activities organised by CUCT and the Cambridge Science Centre, as well as a Q & A session with scientists and Cambridge United players.

MARSHALL ASPIRATION PROJECT

Cambridge United Foundation’s Aspirations work focuses on a variety of target areas, for which Marshall Skills Academy supports, lends expertise, guest delivers and provides information, advice and guidance on.

These projects include the Marshall Aspirations Project, which is a six-week programme in primary schools for 10-11 year olds designed to inspire children to think more positively about their own futures as part of the Foundation’s Premier League Primary Stars PSHE offer.

The collaboration will also see Marshall Skills Academy deliver workshops for local teenagers as part of the Premier League Kicks Programme and Academy players within the Club. There will also be mentoring opportunities to be made available for released academy players to guide and support them with their chosen next steps.

PREMIER LEAGUE PRIMARY STARS

Using the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs across the country, Premier League Primary Stars is inspiring children to learn, be active and develop important life skills. We are no exception at Cambridge United Foundation.

We work alongside our partner schools to deliver teaching and learning in these curriculum areas, as well as upskilling teachers to allow them to deliver high quality PE lessons for their pupils.
Available to every Primary School in England and Wales, free digital resources also cover subjects from maths and English to teamwork and sport.

Competitions range from football tournaments to reading challenges and club delivery includes support to improve teachers’ confidence in delivering PE. We also offer an ever-changing range of assemblies linked to current campaigns or PSHE themes. Premier League values underpin everything on offer, encouraging children to be ambitious, inspiring, connected and fair.

“I’ve really enjoyed this project. It’s made me like football a lot more, as well as enhancing my writing skills. I’ve particularly enjoyed the fact that we haven’t done just writing but learnt about other things like sports photography too.”

SCHOOL SPORT

Our programme of sports delivery in primary schools is developing continuously. We deliver a wide range of PE lessons and extra-curricular sport sessions in local primary schools every week.

Our School Sport programme forms part of our strategy to increase sports participation amongst local communities, but coaches will also have our Foundation’s values at the forefront of their minds during every session:

  • We believe that sports participation has the power to develop respect for the game, for opponents and teammates, and for coaches and officials. Our players, coaches and all other members of staff are important role models in this.
  • We believe that sports can empower people by allowing them to develop characteristics such as confidence, courage, leadership and organisation, which are so important for success
  • We believe that both engaging in sports and seeing the achievements of others can inspire people to build greater motivation in their own lives, to set greater goals, and to have the courage to achieve them.
