CUCT are proud to support and help raise awareness of a number of campaigns both locally and nationally.

Through the Trust we aim to unlock the potential of people of all ages by working with partners to promote key messages across Cambridgeshire that are a priority for local outcomes.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

For 2022 #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek the theme tackling loneliness, enabled us to promote the support our Forever United programme can offer individuals who may feel isolated from their community.

From physical activities such as wellbeing walks and playing football, to social activities such as online bingo and afternoon tea, we will continue to tackle loneliness by creating a stronger community able to support each other to feel included and valued.

THIS GIRL CAN

Our women’s football fitness session ‘Kick It Off’ was launched in partnership with the City Council supported by the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign.

Launched in 2015, the campaign supports women into getting active in many different ways and we use the relaxed, inclusive environment to encourage women to get fit and feel able to talk about their mental health.

“Thank you for providing a group that offers something far more than just fitness.”

EMMA

INDEPENDENT WOMEN’S DAY

Cambridge United Community Trust staff made their pledges to #breakthebias to reduce stereotypes and discrimination against women.

Our inspirational staff demonstrate daily the importance having female representation in a community, in work and socially to create a sustainable future and supporting this national campaign enabled us to hear what International Women’s Day means to them:

“IWD for me is to recognise the significant achievements of women in the past and present to help encourage and motivate women and girls to achieve their personal goals.”

EMMA SMART, YOUTH ENGAGEMENT OFFICER

“‘IWD gives me the opportunity to reflect on the positive impact that inspirational women that I meet on a daily basis have on our local community and beyond.”

SIMON WALL – COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MANAGER

“Together we can #breakthebias. I will continue to lead by example and support those around me to do the same.”

VICKY NEAL – WELLBEING MANAGER

TIME TO TALK AND WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

The partnership with CPSL MInd is a vital one for the community Trust, both on a local and a national level.

We will continue to support campaigns set out by the charity and continue to use their expertise to improve our practises when supporting individuals and groups within the community.
Promoting the importance of talking is not only something we do in our work life, we also embed mental health awareness across all programmes, particularly our Mind Your Head sessions in secondary schools.

Hear from our coaches their pledges committing to #doonething to promote the importance of mental health:

“My pledge is to create an environment where people of all ages can feel comfortable opening up about their mental health.”

ALEX BOYLE – USW STUDENT

“I pledge to use my role as a sports coach to benefit all around me. Helping children in every aspect possible and my peers to hopefully teach them new things every day.”

SAM SKINNER – COMMUNITY COACH

“I pledge to make sure that all my students know that I am always there for them to talk to and that I will make sure they feel listened towhen they put trust in me.”

MATT GOODING – COMMUNITY COACH

#HerGameToo

Cambridge United Community Trust staff made their pledges to #breakthebias to reduce stereotypes and discrimination against women.

We have partnered with #HerGameToo fighting against sexism in football. Our staff and players alike are inclusive of all genders both playing sport and sharing their opinions and we want to support this culture in football through this campaign.

Emma Smith (pictured) is our Clubs fantastic ambassador who leads the campaign and we will continue to work with her and the females in the game to tackle any discrimination experienced.

Active and passive discrimination still exists in society and in football.

Our commitment is to take positive action to promote equality, diversity and inclusion through our programmes and work with the Football Club. By supporting campaigns and our work in schools that address the topics that are either treated as ‘taboo’ subjects or are misunderstood, we can make positive change within our local community.

KICK IT OUT

Over the past year our work with Central Mosque has given our staff an understanding of the additional barriers ethnic diverse communities face when accessing support.

Cambridge United supported the ‘Kick It Out’ campaign back in 2021 by providing a number of gift packs for Ramadan, including food items that can be used throughout the period, club calendars and footballs.

“Cambridge Central Mosque were delighted to welcome everyone involved in the project celebrating diversity in football. On behalf of the Mosque I would like to thank those involved for the generous Ramadan packs that were presented to us. We hope to continue and expand our relationship with Cambridge United Football Club and our local community, for projects that will benefit in the future.”

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY

Meet Henry. Henry is a year 5 pupil from Bottisham Primary School, and was one of the 3179 local children across 13 of our primary schools that received one of our assemblies from the on the theme Celebrating Diversity.

Using local heroes as role models, our staff inspired children to not only learn more about how diversity can enrich our culture, but also think about ways to promote diversity through the means of writing a poem. Following the assemblies, each child was challenged to write a poem to capture what they had learned and think how they could teach others about diversity.

We had over 600 entries to the competition following the assemblies, which demonstrated the outstanding work that local schools are doing to engage young people in understanding and discussing diversity as a topic, which over time we hope will reduce the discrimination still experienced by so many in our community. Henry’s fantastic poem won the competition and not only did this mean he won tickets to watch a Cambridge United game, his poem was read out at half time and was featured in the match day programme.

LEVEL PLAYING FIELD

On 19th March 2022, our Walking Footballers helped us support the ‘Level Playing Field’ campaign by playing a walking football match on the pitch at a first team game to demonstrate the accessibility of the sport.

This was a special event as it involved not only our seniors, but also a number of our disability participants to highlight the inclusivity of the game. Following this, Walking Football Marathon took place on 2nd May in which our senior participants took part in a 12-hour game to raise money for our disability sport sessions!

PicturePath

Cambridge United and the Community Trust teamed up with PicturePath, who support individuals with additional needs, to introduce a visual visitor guide for supporters with an aim to help reduce anxiety for children and adults with SEN.

This expanded on the work of the Football Clubs in reducing barriers to those with additional needs attending football matches by providing ear defenders, fidget toys and providing audio description. This app improves the users match day experience by helping them to prepare for the game, from travel to turnstiles to view from the stand, which has not only helped individuals with additional needs but also those with anxiety and dementia too.
